(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: First Lieutenant (Infantry) Mervin Krieger, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 91st Infantry Division, in action near LaFortuna, Italy, on 6 October 1944. Lieutenant Krieger led his platoon 2,000 yards behind enemy lines to establish a road block and personally killed three of the enemy during attacks on the road block from both front and rear. His patrol accounted for more than 25 enemy dead and wounded, completely disrupted the enemy’s defensive plan, and forced them to withdraw from key positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
