Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 366 (October 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Francis J. Kret (ASN: 0-410046), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 3 February 1945, when elements of his company were isolated by strong enemy forces near Biesheim, France, Captain Kret directed a heroic all-day defense under almost hopeless conditions, and protected the rear of his battalion during an important operation. Although he was soon wounded badly in the arm by two bullets, because he persisted in exposing himself to machine gun, sniper, and grenade fire at 15 to 100 yards range, he gave no sign that he was hurt and retained full command of his men. He directed small arms and mortar fire silencing a machine gun, taking 20 prisoners and keeping the enemy at bay. That night, a rescue company annihilated the Germans, killing and wounding may, and capturing 75. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Kret, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
