The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert E. Krause (ASN: 35542324), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 32d Infantry Division, in action near Timiyac, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 3 March 1945. Sergeant Krause was serving as a scout for an advancing patrol when he detected the presence of the enemy a short distance ahead. His warning enabled the patrol to set up a successful defense, but in the first exchange of fire he observed that one of his officers was wounded and lying on terrain now completely surrounded by the enemy. Heedless of his own safety, he took up an exposed position from which he directed fire on the enemy. The casualties inflicted by his accurate fire and the volume of the hostile fire directed at him enabled another man to safely withdraw the wounded officer from the scene of the action. Sergeant Krause remained in his position and with his weapon provided cover for the evacuation until he received a fatal wound. His gallant sacrifice saved the life of the officer.
