The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Harold F. Kothenbeutel (ASN: 0-1303662), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 August 1944, in France. At a time when Captain Kothenbeutel’s company was preparing to establish a road block, they were attacked by the enemy in force. The swift thrust by the enemy split his company and resulted in confusion and disorganization. Although under extremely adverse conditions of terrain and darkness, Captain Kothenbeutel quickly gained control of his men and audaciously attacked the enemy. This amazing maneuver caught the Germans unprepared and resulted in a highly successful counterthrust at the enemy. Although under direct fire, Captain Kothenbeutel led his company gallantry and completed his mission of establishing the vital road block. His aggressiveness and bravery are worthy of the highest praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Kothenbeutel, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
