Headquarters, 2d Armored Division, General Orders No. 46 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Peter Kostow (ASN: 0-1017284), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 67th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 3 March 1945 in Germany. In the drive to capture the Adolph Hitler bridge over the Rhine River, the tanks were stopped by direct anti-tank, artillery, small arms, and bazooka fire. First Lieutenant Kostow dismounted from his tank and worked his way through heavy resistance until he reached the bridge. His foot reconnaissance enabled him to spot enemy defensive positions on and about the vital bridge. He made his way back through the no man’s land and reported to his commanding officer. The information obtained by First Lieutenant Kostow enabled the task force to neutralize the enemy resistance and reach the bridge without delay.
