    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Edwin Hall Marks, Jr. (ASN: 0-24935), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, in 1944 and 1945. Major Marks made a dangerous volunteer trip across yards of fire-swept terrain to call off friendly artillery fire which was falling on our troops by mistake. Forced into a ditch by a German machine gun; he crawled out and again was pinned down, this time by an artillery barrage and fifteen enemy riflemen. He finally reached the friendly artillery observer and got him to change the direction of the fire. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Marks, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Colonel Marks distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in 1967.
