The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Bernard Korostoff (ASN: 0-1689020), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 34th Infantry Division, in action on 29 January 1944, in the vicinity of Cassino, Italy. An Engineer Officer appeared at the aid station with an urgent call for litter bearers. The officer then led the Aid Men to the patient, unaware that he had entered a mine field. Returning, the officer stepped on a mine, tearing his leg off, killing the patient and injuring one of the litter bearers. Due to the shortage of personnel, Captain Korostoff left the Aid Station and immediately made his way to the injured men, despite enemy shell fire and small arms fire. After administering medical aid, he led the rescue squad back through the minefield to the Aid Station 1,500 yards away. The courage and coolness displayed by Captain Korostoff, despite the danger of the mines, was exemplary and a source of inspiration to all who observed him.
