The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Floyd H. Kornegay (ASN: 34945919), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 52d Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division, in connection with military operations against the enemy on 1 April 1945, in the vicinity of Eissen, Germany. As Private First Class Kornegay’s platoon was advancing on the town of Eissen, Germany, they became pinned down by intense hostile machine gun and small arms fire. Realizing the importance of continuing the attack, Private First Class Kornegay, with complete disregard for his own safety, boldly charged through the hail of point-blank enemy fire and hurled a grenade upon the machine gun nest, killing the crew and enabling this platoon to continue their attack. The aggressiveness and determined valor displayed by Private First Class Kornegay exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
