Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (September 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Tovio A. Korhonen (ASN: 37147191), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in France. As the headquarters group, of which Staff Sergeant Korhonen was a member, was crossing a highway, they were met with a heavy barrage of enemy artillery fire. The first shells wounded four men. As there were no aid men present at the moment, Staff Sergeant Korhonen, immediately, and without regard for his own safety went among the wounded and administered first aid. He then aided in reorganizing the group and assisted the wounded men to an aid station. This courageous act, performed without thought of the personal risk involved, not only brought relief to the wounded but materially contributed to preventing disorganization among the remaining troops. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Korhonen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
