The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred L. Koewing, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Infantry Division on 23 and 24 June 1944. When his platoon leader became a casualty in an enemy counterattack, which forced back the perimeter, he took command, and in the face of heavy close range enemy fire, with utter disregard for his own safety he reorganized his platoon and pushed back the enemy to the original perimeter. For three days he worked tirelessly to better the tactical situation, evacuate wounded and bring up supplies, despite continuous enemy fire.
