The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul M. Koerner, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 January 1944, in Italy. In an effort to determine the strength of the enemy, he led his platoon, following two tanks, into an Italian town. After proceeding a short distance into the town, he saw that the tanks were unable to see the bunkers and houses being used as enemy strong points. He climbed onto the turret of one of the tanks and directed the movement and fire of the tank. The action made him the target for many weapons, but s a result of his courageous action between 40 and 50 enemy were captured, which led to the fall of the town later in the morning. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
