The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Kenneth R. Knowe (ASN: 0-1286142), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 July 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Knowe was serving as Executive Officer with an Infantry Company which was engaged in an assault on the enemy. During the attack, considerable enemy artillery was directed on the attacking forces causing a number of casualties, threatening a disorganization of the attack and bogging down the advance. When the company commander became a casualty, First Lieutenant Knowe immediately moved forward to the leading elements of his company and by his personal bravery and leadership, reorganized his men. As his company moved forward, First Lieutenant Knowe moved ahead of his troops, firing into enemy strong points, inspiring his men in the attack. Through his gallant action the mission was successfully completed despite the enemy attempt to disorganize his forces. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Knowe, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
