The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Herman L. Knight (ASN: 20408183), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 October 1944, in Germany. Corporal Knight and a comrade were standing guard at their gun position when enemy planes came over dropping flares and then clusters of anti-personnel bombs. Despite the bombardment, Corporal Knight and his comrade courageously remained at their post so that if any fire missions were relayed from the command post there would be no delay in executing them. One of the bombs landed directly in the gun pit and Corporal Knight and his comrade were both wounded by the flying shell fragments. Corporal Knight’s heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Armed Forces.
