Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 184 (August 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George L. Knapp (ASN: 37722422), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. When his company was pinned down and sustained several casualties from fire from enemy fortified positions, Sergeant Knapp left a position of comparative safety to go to the aid of a wounded man. While applying a bandage to the wounded man, he was hit by enemy rifle fire. Still under intense enemy fire, Sergeant Knapp rescued another casualty and was wounded the second time. Although he had sustained wounds on both arms, he again went to the aid of another man, and was wounded the third time. Unmindful of his own wounds, Sergeant Knapp dragged the third wounded man to safety before submitting to medical care for his own serious wounds. The courage, tenacity of purpose, and devotion to duty exhibited by Sergeant Knapp reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
