Headquarters, 1st Armored Division, General Orders No. 8 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Troy E. Kloefkorn (ASN: 37010185), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 6th Armored Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 5 January 1944 in the vicinity of Mount Porchia, Italy. Staff Sergeant Kloefkorn repeatedly led his assigned squads of litter bearers through a constant barrage of artillery and mortar fire to and from the aid station, during the entire night’s attack. With complete disregard for his personal safety, even when the barrage was continuously falling on the path of evacuation, he went forward and found two other squads which were not assigned to him, but which he believed were lost and guided them safely back to the aid station. Later he voluntarily reconnoitered to find a route by which he could bring vehicles to the aid station to evacuate the wounded, although the entire route was covered by machine-gun and small arms fire, accompanied by a continuous artillery barrage. Staff Sergeant Kloefkorn’s courage and bravery under fire, his steadfast performance of duty, and his loyalty, exemplify the finest traditions of the Medical Service of the Armed Forces.
