Headquarters, 104th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 164 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Walter M. Kittle (ASN: 35373362), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 104th Infantry Division, in action on 22 and 23 December 1944, in Belgium. When an American Aid Station had been captured by the enemy, Technician Kittle fought as an infantry soldier to re-take the station which still contained American wounded. After the objective was reached, Technician Kittle was wounded, and, though suffering from his wound, he loaded automatic rifle clips for his comrades while they fought off four vigorous counterattacks.
