The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Richard M. King, Jr. (ASN: 0-382038), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 December 1944, in Belgium. An enemy force, composed of tanks and supporting infantry, launched a fierce counterattack against the positions held by Captain King’s battalion. Displaying outstanding leadership and presence of mind in this hazardous situation, Captain King conducted his unit in an orderly withdrawal to alternate positions in the rear. After his unit was in position, he fearlessly returned under fire and directed stranded elements to the rear until the approach of enemy armor forced him to withdraw. Captain King’s courageous example was an inspiration to all who observed him and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
