Headquarters, 8th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 164 (June 8, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Frederick J. King (ASN: 32112216), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 and 9 March 1945, in the vicinity of Gedorf, Germany. While operating his radio, two Germans dismounted from tanks and approached Sergeant King’s position. After taking them prisoner, and marching them to the command post, he returned and directed accurate tank destroyer fire on two German tanks. When the crews were forced to abandon their tanks under the terrific fire, Sergeant King shot and captured the remaining members. Then, with the aid of his companion, the tanks were destroyed with hand grenades. Sergeant King’s great courage and gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
