    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Andrew G. Kerner (ASN: 36396192), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 6th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of *****, Germany, on 7 April 1945. Ignoring direct enemy fire, he remained in position and returned fire in an attempt to thwart an enemy flanking movement. When his gun became inoperative, he utilized his vehicle to evacuate men under direct fire from tanks, small arms and mortar fire. His gallant and aggressive actions saved the lives of many men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
