Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 72 (October 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) William M. Kennedy (ASN: 0-1170027), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1944, in France. Captain Kennedy was serving as battery commander for a field artillery unit. While moving his battery to a new position, Captain Kennedy discovered an enemy emplacement along the road in such a position as to be able to ambush his column. Using great initiative, Captain Kennedy intercepted his column and directed such effective fire on the enemy positions that they were substantially reduced. He constantly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to direct effective fire on the hostile position. Considerable enemy personnel and material were destroyed as a result of his outstanding courage and aggressive fighting spirit. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Kennedy, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
