Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (November 9, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Murray G. Kemp (ASN: 20457738), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 October 1944, in Germany. Technical Sergeant Kemp was serving with an infantry rifle company engaged in an offensive operation against the enemy. During a bitter fire fight, when it became necessary for his platoon to withdraw, Technical Sergeant Kemp and a companion voluntarily covered the withdrawal by remaining in position and directing all the fire possible on the enemy. So effective was this fire that the heavy casualties inflicted upon the German ranks made it necessary for them to withdraw, and Technical Sergeant Kemp’s platoon was able to reoccupy their original positions. The fortitude, daring, and determined fighting spirit manifested by Technical Sergeant Kemp materially contributed to the success of an important tactical operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Kemp, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
