The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Third Grade Frank J. Keaton (ASN: 39107912), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 11 July 1944 to 24 July 1944, in France. Technician Third Grade Keaton distinguished himself by outstanding achievement in administering first aid and evacuating the wounded during this time. Although his normal duties consisted of serving as a Supply Sergeant for a battalion aid station of his regiment, when the litter bearers and aid men were on the verge of exhaustion from fatigue and extremely heavy enemy fire, Technician Third Grade Keaton valiantly went to the front line and worked unceasingly with the wounded. On one occasion he rendered medical attention to several wounded soldiers and with no litters or litter bearers, he constructed improvised litters from tree branches and clothing. Using prisoners of war as litter bearers, Technician Third Grade Keaton led the group to safety. Throughout this trying period he exhibited attributes which reflect the quintessence of unselfishness. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Third Grade Keaton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
