The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Edward W. Keating (ASN: 32318548), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 11 February 1945 to 12 February 1945, in Luxembourg. First Sergeant Keating displayed great heroism in braving murderous enemy fire to organize his platoon in order that it might construct a foot bridge across the Sauer River in support of two battalions of infantry which were cut off from supplies and ammunition. He then constructed a vehicular bridge and, later, assumed responsibility for coordination of use of the bridge. First Sergeant Keating’s gallant actions under enemy fire aided greatly in the success of this operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Sergeant Keating, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
