Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (April 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Joseph Kaufman (ASN: 12153262), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 June 1944, in France. During the assault on the Beaches of Normandy on D-Day, Technician Fifth Grade Kaufman’s tank was stranded offshore on a tank obstacle and he was wounded by mortar fire. As he swam for shore he noticed another wounded man who was unable to swim. In spite of intense fatigue due to his wounds and the exertion of swimming, Technician Fifth Grade Kaufman pulled the other wounded man to the shore. He fought against fatigue and pain while dressing the other soldier’s wounds until he himself lost consciousness. Technician Fifth Grade Kaufman’s gallantry and self-sacrifice saved the life of his comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Kaufman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
