The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Donnell F. Kaufman (ASN: 39218433), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 89th Chemical Mortar Battalion, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. When one of the mortars of his platoon received a direct hit from enemy fire, a nearby building containing ammunition was set afire and one man was wounded. After the remainder of the platoon had been ordered to abandon the position, Corporal Kaufman, transportation corporal, subjecting himself to enemy fire and the possibility of explosion of the ammunition, returned to carry the wounded man to safety. His action spared the wounded man a death by burning and permitted quick medical treatment. The courageous interest in the welfare of another man displayed by Corporal Kaufman reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
