Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (September 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Irving Katzman (ASN: 35992867), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 July 1944, in France. Technical Sergeant Katzman was assigned to duty as a rifleman with an infantry unit engaging the enemy in a sustained attack. The impetus of the attack was brought to a standstill by heavy fire coming from an unidentified source. Technical Sergeant Katzman voluntarily crawled forward through an area in which a heavy concentration of enemy fire was falling in order to identify the hostile strongpoint and adjust artillery fire upon it. Performing this successful mission at great risk to his life, Technical Sergeant Katzman returned with valuable information of the enemy, and friendly artillery was able to neutralize the enemy strongpoint, and the advance continued. The personal bravery and aggressive soldiership displayed by Technical Sergeant Katzman reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
