Headquarters, 34th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 130 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Satoru Kato (ASN: 30104984), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 442d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 July 1944, in Italy. When two of his comrades were wounded, Private Kato, on his own initiative, crawled twenty-five yards through a heavy enemy artillery barrage and administered first aid. Carrying the more seriously wounded man thirty-five yards to cover of a defiladed position, Private Kato then returned for the other man. While on his way back to the other soldier, he himself was seriously wounded. When the extent of his wounds prevented him from reaching his comrade, Private Kato repeatedly refused evacuation until all the other wounded men were removed from the field of battle. Private Kato’s courage and disregard for personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
