The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Nathan Kassak (ASN: 36705508), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in France. Technician Fifth Grade Kassak was serving with the communications section of a field artillery organization engaged in delivering supporting fires to an infantry assault force. Enemy artillery fire was encountered which continuously broke communication lines and endangered the lives of men attempting to carry on maintenance. When a break in the lines was discovered at a crossroad where artillery fire from the enemy batteries was known to be falling at regular intervals, Technician Fifth Grade Kassak attempted the work of repair on his own initiative so that communications could be reestablished. While engaged in this mission Technician Fifth Grade Kassak lost his life. The personal bravery and complete devotion to duty manifested by Technician Fifth Grade Kassak in this soldierly act of daring reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
