The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Howard Julius Kallmann, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 23 June 1944. Upon receiving word that reconnaissance parties of another Field Artillery battalion needed assistance against a group of the enemy located behind our front lines, Captain Kallmann was dispatched with a group of personnel and weapons to their aid. He promptly and efficiently started the use of a 105-mm. in direct fire against the enemy in strongly locates positions in caves, in the side of a bluff which controlled the area, inflicting casualties and causing them to disperse from their strongly fortified positions. Later that day Captain Kallmann with complete disregard for his own safety, volunteered to accompany the executive officer of the Division Artillery in an attempt to recover a wounded officer from an area exposed to enemy fire. While they were trying to accomplish their task, they were taken under fire by machine guns and mortars which resulted in the death of the colonel and severe shock to Captain Kallmann from concussion of high explosive. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Kallmann, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
