Headquarters, 4th Armored Division, General Orders No. 58 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Tenho K. Makela, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 4th Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 19 July 1944, in the vicinity of Raids, France. Lieutenant Makela led his troops into combat in the hedgerows of Normandy. In moving his men into position and having them dig in, he exposed himself to enemy small arms and mortar fire, and went from foxhole to foxhole to check their positions and offer encouragement. Again Lieutenant Makela’s great concern for his men was demonstrated when, a few days after, a neighboring outpost was attacked and the section leader wounded. In utter disregard for his own safety, he advanced 200 yards in the midst of heavy enemy fire, administered first aid and carried the wounded section leader to the rear where he was evacuated. His coolness under fire, his bravery and his constant thought of the safety of his men have been exemplary of the highest standards of a combat officer. Lieutenant Makela has established n enviable pattern of leadership for the men in the command. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
