The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Torrence V. Jones (ASN: 0-2003042), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945 in Germany. Lieutenant Jones, platoon leader, led a patrol into the outskirts of a town and encountered heavy enemy resistance. Withdrawing, his men established a road block at an important crossroads, which the enemy immediately attacked with a numerically superior force. Continually exposing himself to violent enemy fire, Lieutenant Jones not only held his position but spurred his men in a counterattack which netted many enemy casualties and two field pieces captured. The great courage and determined leadership displayed by Lieutenant Jones reflect highest credit on the Armed Forces of the United States.
