Headquarters, 33d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 137 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Field Artillery) Perry Thompson Jones (ASN: 0-23796), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 122d Field Artillery Battalion, 33d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 12 April 1945. Captain Jones was serving as an artillery forward observer with an assaulting rifle company. When the advance was halted by a heavy volume of enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, Captain Jones, without regard for his personal safety, advanced forward beyond the leading elements to a position affording observation of the enemy position. From this position, exposed to enemy fire and to considerable danger from his own artillery burst, he calmly adjusted devastatingly accurate artillery fire on the enemy position 150 yards to his front. As the assault progressed, a bitter fire fight developed at close range with the enemy position. Captain Jones voluntarily left his observation post and advanced forward to see if any further artillery fire was necessary. The assault was successful and the enemy annihilated in his position. During the last sharp action, Captain Jones was instantly killed by an enemy rifleman. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Jones, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
