Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 20 (February 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Paul B. Jones, Jr. (ASN: 13131755), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 August 1944, in France. During a counterattack by the enemy against the positions held by his platoon, Staff Sergeant Jones took command of the platoon, and, through his capable leadership, regained control of the platoon which had become disorganized due to the fierce enemy artillery and small arms fire, and let them in successfully repulsing the counterattack. The enemy continued to direct a heavy concentration of artillery and mortar fire on the platoon’s sector after they had withdrawn. This fire caused a number of casualties in the platoon. With complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Jones left the protection of his position and went o the help of the wounded men, carrying them out of the danger zone to a place of safety. The outstanding conduct exhibited by Staff Sergeant Jones was a profound inspiration to his comrades and is deserving of high recognition.
