Headquarters, 34th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 110 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald L. Jones, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, , 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, in 1944 and 1945. Private First Class Jones and a comrade, with complete disregard for their own safety, operated an important observation post in full view of the enemy and under intense fire from enemy weapons. Though their positions were almost constantly machine gunned and shelled, they held their ground. He and his comrade continually exposed themselves to the enemy fire to better observe the enemy and to shout fire directions to be transmitted. The courage and initiative displayed by Private First Class Jones and his companion in the face of the intense enemy fire reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
