Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 12033 (September 26, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class William Thomas Frickey (ASN: RA-11722454), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Frickey distinguished himself by heroic actions on 15 June 1969, while serving as a scout observer with Troop A, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reaction mission, elements of Troop A came in contact with a large enemy force in well-fortified emplacements. During the initial engagement, Specialist Frickey was wounded when a rocket propelled grenade exploded near his position. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Frickey refused medical attention and maneuvered through the bullet swept area to aid one of his wounded comrades. Upon reaching the injured man, Specialist Frickey evacuated his fallen comrade to a safe position. Having returned to the contact area, Specialist Frickey moved to a strategic position and began to place devastating M-79 grenade fire on the hostile emplacements. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Specialist Frickey’s bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
