The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Arthur Johns (ASN: 35355999), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 April 1945 in Germany. When his company was pinned down by enemy machine gun and mortar fire from its flank, Sergeant Johns, despite the intense enemy fire, unhesitatingly advanced to neutralize the threat to his men. Realizing that only a quick advance would relieve the company from the murderous cross fire, he assaulted the enemy emplacement, destroyed a machine gun, killed its gunner, and took nine prisoners. Due to the aggressive fury of his attack his company was able again to move forward, attaining its objective. The great courage displayed by Sergeant Johns reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
