The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John J. Janco (ASN: 31412590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 April 1945, in Germany. Private First Class Jones went through extreme enemy fire which had caused many casualties to bring one of his comrades to safety. Noticing that the aid man was wounded, Private First Class Janco crawled to him and rendered first aid. Then with the medical supplies he took from the aid man, he applied first aid to his other wounded comrade despite he himself being wounded in both legs. Ignoring his painful wounds, Private First Class Janco insisted on accompanying his platoon to the objective where he was mortally wounded by a sniper. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Janco, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
