Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 74 (October 9, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Albert J. Jaeger (ASN: 32770559), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 531st Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Separate), in support of the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1944, in France. While driving up in his vehicle to a new gun position, Private Jaeger discovered an enemy gun emplacement several hundred yards away. With great daring, and in an effort to divert the enemy fire until vulnerable vehicles in the column could disperse and set up a defense, Private Jaeger and his comrades drove forward to engage the hostile gun. An intense fire fight ensued, and other gun emplacements formerly unknown opened up on the vehicle, knocking it out and killing Private jaeger and the vehicle commander. The daring and unselfish self-sacrifice exhibited by the actions of Private Jaeger and his comrades saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers by diverting the enemy fire until such time as other organization guns could be brought to bear on the enemy, who were eventually destroyed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Jaeger, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
