The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John Melvin Jacobsen (ASN: 0-1322035), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 December 1944, in Belgium. While his company was attacking they were subjected to fierce fire which resulted in disorganization when two of the officers and the first sergeant became casualties. At great risk to his life, Captain Jacobsen immediately reorganized his men and directed them into defensive positions. While exhorting and encouraging his men, Captain Jacobsen was painfully wounded but continued to move around the front lines with his troops until the situation became stabilized. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Jacobsen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
