(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John Melvin Jacobsen (ASN: 0-1322035), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations in 1944 and 1945. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Jacobsen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John Melvin Jacobsen (ASN: 0-1322035), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. After Captain Jacobsen’s company had crossed the Roer River, they started through a dense woods when many casualties including three platoon leaders, were suffered from booby traps and mines. After emerging from the woods, he made an immediate reorganization, and, although his original force was badly depleted, Captain Jacobsen courageously led his men forward. Several times when intense enemy fire threatened to half the attack, Captain Jacobsen, at the head of the company, urged his men forward. Inspired by his courage the men continued on, killing twenty of the enemy, seizing fifty prisoners, and successfully capturing an enemy town. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Jacobsen reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
