Washington Ives graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1924. During combat in the Pacific in World War II he proved his innovativeness by calling in evacuation planes for some of his wounded by using a war correspondent Eric Sevaried’s radio broadcasts. He retired in 1954 as a U.S. Army Colonel.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Ives, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
