The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Philip N. Ingraham (ASN: 0-1283612), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 July 1944 in France. When the company he was commanding was suddenly ambushed by enemy tanks, firing from concealed positions, Captain Ingraham remained in a completely exposed position in order to direct the men of his command to positions of safety. While he was thus engaged he fell under crossfire from enemy machine guns. For his total disregard for his own safety and his devotion to his command Captain Ingraham reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
