The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Benjamin F. Gibbons, Jr. (ASN: 0-60816), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 September 1950 in the vicinity of Kochang and Chon-ju, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Gibbons was in command of his regimental Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon and had the mission of preceding his regiment during its advance from Kochang to Chon-ju, a distance of 76 miles. Resolutely pushing forward through the enemy-infested terrain, he daringly cleared the path of advance for the battalion following behind. When his platoon clashed with a strong group of hostile elements at a point 20 miles from Chon-ju, Lieutenant Gibbons immediately dismounted from his vehicle and, ordering his men to follow him, engaged the enemy in a firefight. When the enemy took to retreat, he pursued them until all were killed, thus permitting the uninterrupted continuation of the regimental advance. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Lieutenant Gibbons reflect great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
