The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Benjamin F. Gibbons, Jr. (ASN: 0-60816), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 1 to 12 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. During this period Lieutenant Gibbons, leader of his regiment’s Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, made repeated patrols deep into enemy territory in order to gain information about enemy materiel and troops dispositions. Lieutenant Gibbons repeatedly reconnoitered enemy territory, either alone or aided by only one or two members of his platoon. The information he obtained was of inestimable aid to his regimental commander in his decisions. As a result of his daring penetrations of enemy held territory his regiment was enabled to inflict severe casualties upon the enemy. During the period when his regiment was on the offensive his platoon spearheaded the advance of the regiment. Displaying complete indifference for his personal safety, he cleared the way of snipers and relayed to higher headquarters information necessary to overcome major obstacles. His actions during this entire period were an inspiration to all his men and the information which he gathered enabled his commander to avoid traps set by the enemy and prevented the enemy from inflicting heavy casualties upon his regiment. The gallantry and high devotion to duty displayed on these occasions by Lieutenant Gibbons reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
