The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert Harold Hunter (ASN: 33224752), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Hunter was serving as a squad leader with an infantry unit, and was given the mission of protecting an important roadblock. The enemy launched a vigorous attack aimed at the roadblock and sensing that additional fire power was needed, Staff Sergeant Hunter rushed to the rear, procured a heavy mortar, and unaided carried it back to the roadblock from which he fired it until his ammunition was exhausted. He then began firing anti-tank grenades and when they too ran out, he picked up a bazooka and fired all the ammunition. His daring and aggressive fighting had caused the enemy counterattack to be repelled. In order to further punish the routed enemy, he attacked with an automatic rifle, during which time he was mortally wounded. The devotion to duty displayed by his heroism reflects great credit on Staff Sergeant Hunter and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
