The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Armor) Richard Johnson Hunt (ASN: 0-18752), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 744th Light Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. Following the assault crossing of the Rhine River, Lieutenant Colonel Hunt assumed command of a task force composed of tanks and infantry which had as its objective the town of Stadsforst. Under his skillful and courageous leadership, the task force advanced swiftly through stubborn opposition from crack enemy armored and infantry units to the objective where they effectively reduced the strong enemy defenses located in the town. Lieutenant Colonel Hunt’s gallant example during this action was an inspiration to his men and contributed much to the successful completion of the mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Hunt, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
