Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 95 (November 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George L. Hunsick (ASN: 36617590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Hunsick was serving as a Platoon Sergeant with an Infantry Company engaged in repulsing a determined enemy counterattack. In order that contact could be established between his company and an adjoining one, Staff Sergeant Hunsick voluntarily led a patrol of four men on the hazardous mission of neutralizing two enemy machine gun emplacements which covered the route of approach. In order to reach a spot from which effective grenade fire could be placed on the hostile positions, Staff Sergeant Hunsick advanced across open terrain covered by enemy fire and under direct observation from the gun positions he was attempting to neutralize. As a result of his complete devotion to duty manifested in this daring act, Staff Sergeant Hunsick destroyed two enemy gun emplacements, which in turn materially contributed to the success of an important tactical operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Hunsick, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
