The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joe W. Humphries (ASN: 34896001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 March 1945, in Germany. Sergeant Humphries’ company was engaged in a night attack when the lead elements were pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun and small arms fire. Sergeant Humphries led his squad forward through the fire to within ten yards of the strongpoint. One of the enemy started moving toward him but Sergeant Humphries killed him. A second enemy rose to fire at him but accurate fire from the squad killed the enemy soldier. Through Sergeant Humphries’ gallant action and forceful leadership the strongpoint was knocked out and the attack continued. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Humphries, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
