Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 131 (May 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joe H. Humphrey (ASN: 34372488), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 April 1945, in Germany. When two ammunition trucks containing four hundred rounds of high explosives were ignited by enemy artillery fire, an immobilized gasoline truck close to the burning vehicles was in imminent danger of exploding. Volunteers were called for to repair the truck so that it could be removed rom the danger area. Private First Class Humphrey, amid exploding shells, both hostile and those of the burning ammunition vehicles, ran to the truck and assisted in replacing the front wheels and repairing the brake system, making it possible to drive the vehicle to a safe position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Humphrey, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
