Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 1574 (April 11, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Walter William Zimmerman (ASN: US-52651299), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Zimmerman distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 1 December 1966, while serving as an assistant machine gunner with Company B, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When his platoon became pinned down by intense enemy fire, Specialist Zimmerman, seeing two of his comrades fall wounded, began maneuvering under fire toward their position. Although every move he made attracted the hostile fire to himself, Specialist Zimmerman continued moving until he reached the wounded man. After pulling one of the soldiers to an area of relative safety, Specialist Zimmerman, with complete disregard for his own safety, began moving back into the endangered area after the other man. Although he was the target of determined Viet Cong snipers, who were doing their best to hit him, Specialist Zimmerman continued his attempt to reach his fallen comrade until ordered to withdraw with the remainder of the company. Specialist Zimmerman’s display of personal bravery and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers stands in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
