The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Second Lieutenant Donald R. Dunagan, United States Marine Corps, for meritorious service in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving in various capacities with the FIRST Marine Division, from 28 June 1967 to 7 January 1968. During this period, First Lieutenant Dunagan performed his myriad duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. In his initial assignment as Intelligence Officer of the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, he displayed outstanding ability to provide his commanding officer with concise, logical Order of Battle studies and Intelligence Estimates that were of immeasurable value not only to his own unit, but also to higher headquarters. Constantly seeking means of providing accurate and timely intelligence support, he participated in several major combat operations including Operations PIKE, COCHISE, and SWIFT. In order to improve his ability to advise and assist his command on intelligence matters, he frequently disregarded his own safety to accompany teams on reconnaissance patrols. Aware that the 106-mm. Recoilless Rifle Platoon had been without an officer for three months, First Lieutenant Dunagan voluntarily assumed the responsibility of this additional duty. Working tirelessly, he planned and supervised a comprehensive training program and rapidly molded the platoon into a highly proficient combat unit capable of accomplishing all assigned missions. On 23 December 1967, he was transferred to the G-2 Section, Headquarters, FIRST Marine Division specifically to utilize his organization talents to realign the Basic Intelligence Unit. Within two weeks, he succeeded in completely reorganizing the file and record system and in improving procedures used in maintaining the Order of Battle information. While conducting a reconnaissance of an enemy rocket launch site, he was seriously wounded and subsequently medically evacuated from the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Dunagan’s superior professionalism, outstanding leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty throughout, materially enhanced the intelligence posture of the Division and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service.
